The freshman class of our New York public high school consists of students from around the five boroughs. They arrive from countless middle schools and from cultural backgrounds as rich as our locale. Each student also arrives at a varying degree of mathematics know-how and interest level. Some have learned to take copious notes during middle school, while others barely like to touch a pen to paper. In order for me to inspire my students academically, I must first get to know them as individuals. Small white boards are a springboard into conversation for both academic and social purposes. My intention is to spark momentum for these young adults to see Algebra (and themselves) as a constant work in progress.
