Our students seldom read on their own. But I believe that introducing them to great books, to rich literature can engage them and help them become independent readers. My students will read Esperanza Rising and engage in small group and whole group discussion as well as practice new vocabulary, learn to cite textual evidence and improve their reading comprehension. I believe all students can be taught to enjoy reading. We need great books that will engage them in their worlds and instill a love for literature. Esperanza Rising is a great tool to to help us accomplish this important goal.
