I would like to help some of our families who struggle with accessibility to books and supplies do some art projects at home with their children. My project would pair time-proven storybooks and art supplies and families who have emerging language skills to those without them. They would have access to a kit to be checked out like a library book. The kit would have a hardback storybook by a well-accepted author like Eric Carle or Dr. Suess. It would also have a written (by Me) lesson plan for creating an artwork based on the story. The family would be instructed to do the artwork/craft together and either photograph the product or send it back to me for copying and then, they could keep their artwork. They would send the kit back for replenishing and checking out by another family. As their art teacher, I am asked over and over, "can I keep this crayon?", "can I take this marker home, if I bring it back tomorrow?" Most of the time I have to say no because I don't have extra, I have to have them for the next class. This would allow me to suggest that they check out a family kit and do a project at home together. These projects will help the students and their families with reading and English skills as well as strengthen family bonds.
