When students have access to books at their level, they are able to comprehend, draw conclusions, and build fluency. Having a set of books specifically for guided reading, will allow students to apply decoding skills, expand comprehension, and work towards literacy under the guidance of their teacher.
When reading is possible, opportunities are endless.
These books will be used to issue "running records" throughout the school year to find students' approximate reading levels and make instructional decisions when forming reading groups. Books will also be used for guided reading, which will take place approximately 3 times per week. Students will also be allowed to choose any book in the classroom to take home for nightly reading and therefore will need durable tote bags to transport books to and from school. With these two items, all students will have access to books at their level and can work towards fluency. As their teacher, I will be able to support them in this work with these essential tools.
