  • Expanding Our Decodable Reader Library

    Funded Feb 6, 2023

Thank you for helping fund my school project for decodable readers. Each book teaches students different phonics patterns and how they can apply those skills to their reading. These books are engaging for students with child friendly stories and colorful illustrations. Each decodable reader kits also provides teachers with a teaching guide and supplemental worksheets and extra lessons to expand learning. They are also small enough for easy storage.

Based on the Science of Reading research based practices, these decodable readers are used during small group instruction based on phonics skills each student needs support with. Students are then given these books to practice applying skills taught. They can also keep these books in book bags to practice reading fluency.

We appreciate your support in getting this project fully funded!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Nicholas

  • Engage Curious Second Graders with Scholastic News

    Funded Sep 18, 2022

Thank you so much for your donations. Students read Scholastic News each week and are engaged with relevant topics and Science and Social Studies Skills. This has also been another way to incorporate more Expository and Information text into students' learning. These past two issues were about the season Winter and this past week students were able to read more about MLK Jr. After we read and discuss each issue, Scholastic News are sent home to re read with families.

Students also love the digital component that we can use on our SMART Tv. There is a video and other activities for each issues along with a read aloud option for struggling readers. Then we answer the the questions at the end.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Nicholas

  • Expanding Students' Social Skills Through Children's Literature

    Funded Aug 7, 2018

Thank you so much for your donations to help support social skills instruction at my school. We had been currently implementing an older social skills curriculum, and now these books enhance that curriculum and keep students engaged. These books also allow for cross curricular units within the areas of Social Skills, English Language Arts, and Social Studies.

Many of the books were great to read in the beginning of the year as they reinforced school rules, friendship, and feelings about starting the school year. I have read the books to students and also did follow up activities to help reinforce social lessons taught in several of the books you have helped donate. Some of the books that allowed for several follow-up activities included "Bucket Filling Around the World".: a Bucket Filling/Dipping sort and classroom bucket for positive reinforcement, and Social Studies Diversity Unit on Holidays Around The World "Rainbow Fish": what makes a friend writing prompt, and a class sharing book, "Tease Monster" and the "Juice Box Bully" were great to read with our Anti-Bullying unit and students wrote about "Stomping out Bullying". As all of these books are read to students, they are then placed in the classroom library for students to practice reading and reviewing these very important social skills.

Included are some pictures of the books in the classroom library and some of the follow activities and units that were implemented after reading each book. Your donation has helped my students this year and future first graders grow to be more socially aware individuals in a diverse society.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Nicholas

First graders love books! First grade is a very important year where they learn to read and continue to learn social skills. However, every year social emotional learning is an area they continue to struggle with. In order to progress academically, they need this support first, while also expanding their knowledge of diversity and accepting other's differences. By having social skills taught through children's literature they will be engaged in these very important life skills and will be motivated to read these books on their own. Reading these books will improve their reading and social awareness to lay that foundation at an early age of how to respect themselves and others throughout life. This will allow them to be prepared to learn future academic skills in collaborative settings and become more well rounded citizens.
