Over the past few years I have slowly phased out the use for desks in my classroom. I have always felt that rows of desks have added to the robotic nature of an industrialized school system. This type of environment is not very conducive to creativity. What our schools really need is to teach students how to think creatively. Creativity is becoming a key to success in our society. Several Fortune 500 companies offer flexible seating to employees. This is expected to trickle down to all companies by the time my students join the workforce. As teachers, we need to promote and teach this in our classrooms to truly prepare students for the future. But we can’t do it alone because seating is expensive. What are the benefits of having bean bag chairs in my classroom? Bean bag chairs are durable. Some fillings are designed to last a lifetime; others will simply need a bag of beans added from time to time. They are lightweight and can easily be moved around by students to form individual, paired, or group reading. They cradle the body, including the spine, so not only is it amazingly comfortable for children, it promotes better posture, invokes calmness and reduces headaches!
