There have been many studies done to show the benefits of having flexible seating in the classroom. For example, studies show that allowing students a choice in their seating can allow them to burn excess energy for a more focused mindset, build motivation and engagement in what they are learning, allow for better oxygen flow to the brain and finally help students become more self-aware of the type of seating that helps them to learn best. Several of my students struggle to conform to the typical classroom desks in rows and it shows in their level of focus and engagement during lessons. A classroom with flexible seating would allow them a choice of where to sit and help instill accountability in them. They will be responsible for choosing a seat that is appropriate for them. Allowing 5th graders to do this can greatly increase their level of responsibility as well as prepare them for important decision making skills which they will need the following year in middle school. Flexible seating will allow me to create a strong, student-centered classroom where my kids can focus and be set up for success during our daily lessons. These students come from difficult neighborhoods and several have experienced major trauma in their short lives. When they feel like they have so little control over what is going on in their personal lives, I would like to at least help give them a place where they can feel comfortable and in control in the safe haven of my classroom.
