Research shows that children spend 21-23 hours a week on technology. That is almost a whole day of not talking! Children don't just PLAY anymore! We must do something to help generate more purposeful talk to help oral language and vocabulary develop which is critical for reading. Research also shows that 1st grade students who are linguistically "poor" knew 5,000 words, whereas linguistically "rich" 1st grade students knew 20,000 words. I have seen a decline of oral language development in our area in just the past 12 years. I want ALL of my Kinder students to be "rich" and I know that having these "toys" (like dolls, play food, puzzles, felt boards, etc.) will help me support my students. I plan to scaffold using vocabulary they may not know and sentence stems to communicate their ideas during this "play time." I know when I grew up we had "play" centers that got us talking to our friends and then our teacher would come to facilitate our discussions at that center. I want to bring this concept back to the Kindergarten & First grade classrooms at my school in the form of an Oral Language Lab that all students will be allowed to utilize. These toys will help bring my vision of a language rich classroom to life and help all students succeed in their education.
