  • Sensory and Incentives for Special Needs

    Funded Oct 20, 2024

Mahalo nui loa for funding my project for incentives and sensory supplies for our special needs students. This will really help our students reach their behavior goals and address their sensory differences. Your support will make a world of difference in addressing the gaps that we have in our materials and supplies.”

  • Assessment Kit for Preschoolers

    Funded Mar 16, 2024

I want to thank those who contributed to purchasing a new preschool assessment kit, the Learning Accomplishment Profile-Diagnostic Edition, for Kohala Elementary School. The updated version is very similar to the one that I have been using for many years, with many improvements. For example, the original puzzles were wooden inset ones that were really more appropriate for children in Kindergarten or First Grade. The new version of the puzzles have a picture of the finished object on the puzzle board and the pieces are higher than the board, allowing for easier manipulation. This test will continue to help make the formal assessment more authentic for preschoolers.”

  • Wobble Chairs for Active Studentst

    Funded Nov 19, 2023

Mahali nui for supporting my project "Wobble Chairs for Active Students". Many of the Special Education students at our school have difficulty maintaining their focus and attention during instruction and independent work time. Sometimes it's due to a medical diagnosis (ADHD) and sometimes due to avoidance of tasks that they find difficult.

These wobble stools provide an outlet for their extra energy and were provided to a Special Education classroom for 3rd graders. They also have typical chairs, so the stools were stacked when not in use. They became so popular that the teacher had to assign them in two groups on a regular basis. As a result, there was less disruption during instruction and more work completed with less prompting from the teacher.”

  • Headsets with Microphones for ELL Students

    Funded Oct 11, 2023

Mahalo nui for your support of my project "Headsets with Microphones for ELL Students" . Our English Learner students needed this type of technology because, unlike typical students, they need practice with speaking English. The online computer program they use allows them to record their oral responses, play them back and refine their oral language. This helps to prepare them for the annual assessment they take in January and February called the WIDA ACCESS.

Although all classroom teachers have access to this program for their students, it was consistently used during the Extended Learning Opportunity program that was held after school three days per week. As administrator of the WIDA ACCESS, I noticed that the students who had consistently practiced speaking were much more comfortable during the test.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Tucker

  • A Place to Work Together

    Funded Apr 7, 2022

I am the Student Services Coordinator and the English Learners (EL) Coordinator at Kohala Elementary School. I conduct individual student assessments for potential Special Education eligibility and individual screening tests for EL eligibility. I also monitor two tutors who work with active EL students. The new table and chairs arrived last May of 2022. They replaced a table that I retrieved out of the school dumpster when my previous table was commandeered at the beginning of the COVID19 pandemic for student seating outside, and two kitchen chairs that I brought from home 15 years ago. They have been situated in a covered semi-outdoors corridor outside of my office.

I originally applied for funds to replace both with new products for the EL students. The EL tutors needed a spot to work with them in very small groups. Most of the 330+ students and staff walk by this area at least once per week and many several times per day. Once the new table and chairs were assembled, everyone who walked by admired them. I also had multiple opportunities to credit Donors Choose and your donation.

Now, in addition to the EL students, our Title I tutor uses it daily and our Occupational Therapist brings her students to it for therapy sessions. Sometimes our School Counselor works with a student if it is free. Having something that is new and fresh tells our students that we value them. Also, the old table and chairs were re-cycled so nothing went back into the dumpster! I am very grateful that you chose this project to support, and anticipate that they will be in use long after I've retired.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Tucker
