The students I will begin working with this year have a hundred strikes against them - I want to help level the playing field and give them a safe space where they can learn and grow both as students and as people. There are a few new social and emotional activities and games in my cart to complement the curriculum and workbooks. Everything else in the cart was picked out with the various needs of my students in mind - differentiated seating, movement options, filtered lights (especially filtered lights!). Things that will help the classroom be a positive, warm, and safe space for my students to learn and practice skills they need. The MindUp curriculum is designed to help students understand the brain-body connection and guides them to understanding the natural reactions they have in order to become more in control of those reactions. It is a curriculum that can be used in general education classes as well as a class like mine, and I am hoping to introduce it to my colleagues. The Hero Club and other character building curriculum and games are essential for these students who have difficulty seeing themselves in a positive light. I believe that every student is a blessing in my life and it is my job to help them see that about themselves. The other items on the list, such as the balls and the lap desks, will directly aid in the growth of these students; helping them complete work in a chosen comfortable space or get energy out between recesses. Everything I have chosen I have done with best practices in mind, along with current and past research into social and emotional growth in the classroom. Thank you so much for helping!
