Scholastic News articles are not only engaging to young readers but they also provide background knowledge which is the key to academic success. Building students literacy skills at an early age directly correlates to their success in all other academic subjects in their future. Often times the students in our high poverty populations lack access to rich content that can develop their background and content knowledge. Exposing students to relevant news articles like Scholastic gives them access and background knowledge to build their academic vocabulary. A subscription to Scholastic also gives teachers and students access to related videos and other online features. Scholastic is directly correlated to the Common Core State Standards and truly impacts student achievement. We will be using these weekly in our classroom readings and discussions. The mentor text books that I selected will be read aloud to my class to increase discussion, and teach important topics in fifth grade. These books all have powerful messages that help build our students holistically. Lastly, the blocks and pillows will be used for literacy center games and reading around the classroom. They will provide students access to learning that is interactive and directly linked to their reading goals.
