After reading many different studies and professional development sessions, I have found that reading strategies can be taught not just by passages and supplemental series books but by engaging stories. Students need to be read to regularly and new books will allow us to have great conversations about morals, as well as, understanding characterization, main idea, plot and other comprehension strategies I hope to strengthen with my students this year. I chose books like, "My Mouth is a Volcano", "What If Everybody Did That", and "The Invisible Boy" because I want to ensure we build a community in our classroom of understanding and respect. I then chose various fiction and nonfiction books that can be used to teach specific comprehension strategies, such as, inferencing in "Two Bad Ants", and main idea/details in "Fossil".
