Student surveys have shown that far too many children have developed a distaste for reading. I strongly believe this is because they have not been exposed to books that generate a sense of excitement and passion. My students need access to books that captivate them; books that they can't put down as they flip through page after page in anticipation of what possible outcomes may be approaching. As a first year teacher, my classroom library has been created using books that I read as a child. These books are aging and, more often than not, fail to relate to my students' life experiences. I distinctly remember when I first received Dinosaurs Before Dark, the first of the Magic Treehouse Series, and the love for reading that soon blossomed. I was a reluctant reader who lacked confidence in my abilities, but this book alone generated a personal desire to explore the contents of more and more books throughout my childhood. The books I am hoping to fill my library with contain characters, storylines, and settings to which my students can find personal connections with. These books contain a diverse range of characters, plots, and adventures that could potentially spark a love for reading. As stated, my students desire to become absorbed in rich academic experiences, and I believe these books will demonstrate that amazing discoveries can be made within their pages and within books that fill shelves around the world.
