As a literacy specialist, I teach the students that struggle with reading. Typically, these students struggle because they have a difficult time maintaining focus. The lack of focus ultimately affects their comprehension. Students need to be able to move and fidgit while reading a good book! By allowing the students to move around slightly while working on their lesson, it makes it easier for them to focus on their task at hand. Typical school chairs do not allow for proper movement that some kids need. There are three choices in flexible seating that I would like to have as choices in my classroom. The first are Busy Bands. They are rubber strips that attach to the bottom of the desk chair that allow the children to move their feet around without making any extra noise. The second option are balance discs that children place on their desk chairs. This allows for a little bit of wiggling without falling off the chair. My last request is for stability ball chairs. This allows for the maximum amount of moving while still sitting at my instructional table. These flexible seating options would be a welcome addition to my class and would be used by students for years to come.
