Computer literacy is just like any other literacy: Learning how to read is either excruciating or invigorating depending on what you are reading. My students get a crash course in file creation and management, data formats and file types, but what keeps them awake is the chance to add their personal touch and take ownership of their creations: Web design comes to life when a page goes live, Photoshop becomes real when students can post their printed compositions, and vector designs just make a visceral kind of sense when they are burned onto a sheet of acrylic or laminate with a 500 milliwatt laser! The maker movement is at the bleeding edge of the next industrial revolution. It is empowering and inspiring, and puts the powers of enreprenurship, invention, innovation, and iteration directly into the hands of anyone with the curiosity and dedication to dive in, take chances, and get messy. It is absolutely critical that I provide my students not only with awareness of this movement, but that I prepare them for the incredible future that is barreling towards them with every tool at my disposal. I need to put these tools in their hands so that they can be at the wheel of the next revolution, instead of caught in its wake.
