It is a wonder to see the excitement in a child's eyes when they open up a new box of colored pencils. It is often the basic classroom supplies that go overlooked when considering a teacher's classroom setup. However, in a space with limited resources, this is the reality that my students and I find ourselves. It is with the most basic of supplies -- markers, pencils, a calendar -- that my students will have a more seamless transition into their fifth grade year. If the children do not need to worry about how they will complete their math homework, they can focus their attention on becoming the incredible humans that I know they can be.
Our classroom will be collaborative, inviting and a space that every student can feel comfortable. We will build a cozy reading center that the children will be engaged in guided and individual reading opportunities. The bench and carpet will add dynamic seating options for children of every learning style.
The personal white boards give the children the opportunity to take risks, make mistakes and collaboratively work out tricky math problems. As a teacher, this will give me the chance to observe how their minds are working through a problem in live time. PLUS these whiteboards will reduce the carbon footprint of our classroom :)
Logistical items (such as the laminator or paper cutter) will help me be a better educator, as I will have more time to dedicate to the children. With my own personal laminator, I will not have to drive to the district office in order to laminate student work, and I can spend that time working on our next great science experiment instead. Admittedly, these are not the most beautiful items, but they certainly will help our classroom run smoothly.
