Kids on the Move! Learning Skills for Life

Funded Aug 29, 2018

Thank you so much for the new resources you have provided the students at Carver Elementary. The students and I are enjoying the new resources while learning different movement concepts and skills. The younger level of students are using the hula hoops and poly spots to understand the movement concepts of general and self space. Gator balls, foam tennis balls, bean bags, whiffle balls and hula hoops are being utilized to practice the skills of throwing and catching. While throwing and catching, students are learning the difference between force and effort, by using different objects to throw. "The bean bag will travel further than the whiffle ball, because it is heavier," is an example of a prediction a student made during our lessons. Our active learners will also get the opportunity to practice other skills such as: kicking and dribbling with the soccer balls, striking with the whiffle and foam tennis balls, and punting with the soft footballs.

The students were so excited to receive the materials you have donated to them, and felt very honored and grateful. The second grade class got the opportunity to open the boxes the resources were in. Anxiously waiting for my whistle, the students got into groups surrounding the boxes full of your donations. "Drum roll, please," I said as the students began to hit the ground quickly with their hands. As soon as they hear the whistle, the grouped students ripped open into the boxes as if it was Christmas day. I could hear the shrills and shrieks of excitement, along with some phrases such as: "awesome," "wow," "so cool," "it looks like so much fun," "no way!" The students then grabbed one item they were excited to use in PE class. We all got together with their one resource and took a group thank you picture.

Students are eager to try to use all the resources you have provided us in PE. Students will continue to use your donations to find other fun ways to move and use their bodies. The upcoming projects are: dribbling, passing, and kicking with our feet with the soccer balls; striking with different objects with the whiffle and foam tennis balls, and reinforcing the movement concepts of self space and general space. Hopefully, with your help, students can transfer these concepts and skills outside of PE and into their everyday lives to grow healthy bodies and mind”

With gratitude,
