Research supports that children need learning experiences that allow them to go “deeper” into content in order to solidify their thinking. This quality area rug will allow my students to leave the confines of their desk and participate in multiple learning tasks to master the mathematics they need to be successful in third grade. Basic worksheet/paper-pencil tasks ha ve their place for independent practice; however this mode of instruction is minimally challenging and does not enrich thinking. As a third grade math teacher, I have found so much success in the CRV (Concrete, Representational, Abstract) model of instruction. This model scaffolds learning by providing hands-on, manipulation of numbers, illustrating problem-solving with pictures and models, and finally mastering content efficiently using numbers alone. Our students excel when they have the opportunity to engage in all of these experiences throughout my classroom. Many of my students are at different levels of their learning in the CRV model. In order to be successful, they need space to engage in these learning practices. The classroom rug would provide a safe, comfortable learning space for my third graders.
