In any classroom, especially an inclusive one, it is crucial to differentiate to the diverse learning styles in the class. In eighth grade, the students are discovering so much about themselves, their brains, their learning styles, etc. I want to support their discovery in what helps them grasp material best by providing visual, hands-on manipulatives. This means, math cannot be ONLY on paper. I am raising money for a Nasco Common Core Math Kit for grade 8 that has a little bit of everything in terms of manipulatives involving standards that these students will learn. I am additionally raising money for a Double-Sided Grid Dry Erase Board Kit, as no matter the lesson, these are great for hands-on students individually, in groups or as a class to do work, have healthy competition, and even discover that making mistakes is an amazing way to learn! Math may get a reputation for "you get it or you don't". . . put me in a history class and read biographies about two presidents and it will go right over my head. However, if I were to draw a Venn diagram comparing the presidents' traits, then I'll likely grasp and remember the material. We all work differently, in all subjects. Remember when your "math destiny" was decided in middle school? I want to show students that anyone can be successful in math, we all just comprehend information in different ways . . . one very common way being hands-on and by making connections through applications.
