I am requesting a classroom set of Ukuleles for my elementary music classroom and 10 tuners. Ukuleles are such a great way to teach concepts like melody, rhythm, harmony, form and style. They are also a great way to actively engage students in music making and creating. Using simple, catchy tunes I will be looking to make these ukuleles a life-long musical companion for my students.
Who knew that a single instrument could create so much joy? My students love to have hands on experiences. Every fourth grade student that comes into my classroom will have the opportunity to pick up these instruments and feel success in music. Students will daily combine melodic, harmonic and chordal playing and singing--all at the same time. The students will perform for other classes and for parents several times during the year. The ability to tune their own instruments, with the help of the 10 tuners, will enhance ear training and pitch matching. Since there will only be 10 tuners and 30 ukuleles, the students will learn to help each other and successfully work together.
Actively making music with children is a fun and easy way to support their social emotional learning, helping them to develop self-regulation, self-confidence, leadership skills, social skills, and much more! All of this plus the experience of musicianship, culture, and responsibility can come through the learning of the ukulele. This instrument will give them fun from day one and continue throughout their life time. I have seen how success in the arts can create confidence in a child who may not do as well academically. This musical success can then translate into more confidence in the classroom. This classroom set of ukuleles will help do that.
