In an ever growing world full of children staring at screens, play time is critical in teaching children how to function and thrive in the world around them. Play promotes self-worth, teaches social skills, empathy, helps children learn how to focus and is fun! Sadly, due to very limited budgets many early childhood programs are sharing toys throughout a variety of classrooms and they are stretched thin. The children in my program could greatly benefit from two sets of Picasso building blocks and new multi-ethnic dolls. Picasso Tile Blocks help children with hand-eye coordination, sensory issues, and critical thinking skills. Currently, my classroom does not have any type of these blocks available for just our room. By gaining these, it would also benefit the other rooms from not having to share with us anymore. Playing with dolls provides comfort and helps children use their imaginations. Toddlers then begin to learn more about how to “take care” of their dolls, which teach them compassion and selflessness. Having dolls available that look like all different children is important. These dolls will be available every day to the children of a variety of programs in the dramatic play area.
