I taught my incoming class this past year. They are a self-contained Special Education class that have behavioral needs. Much of the time they cannot sit still for more than 5 minutes. Conventional seating, such as desks and chairs, just don't work! Many of my students spent more time sitting on the floor, laying under their desk, or just plain standing! That was until I learned about flexible seating. Flexible seating means a classroom that offers options other than just a desk and chair to learn. One teacher donated an exercise ball for a student to use and it changed his ability to focus on his weakest subject. Another student borrowed a Wobble Cushion for a day of state testing and he sat still for 20 minutes (unlike the 30 seconds he maintained the day before). I chose the Flex-Space Wobble Cushion and Flex-Space Wobble Chairs to help my students and to have alternatives in my classroom. This will allow my students to tap into their learning styles and preferences while allowing me to still be able to teach. They can get more comfortable and therefore will be more engaged in their learning. I firmly believe having more options in my classroom will help my students engage more in class lessons, which will reduce the amount of behavioral problems that occur!
