My students deal with a number of challenges that have interfered with their ability to develop the reading skills they need. As a self contained special education classroom, each of my students must overcome a learning disability in order to learn. As a classroom within an alternative high school, all of my students face obstacles that have led them to fall behind on high school credits such as being young mothers. Despite these obstacles my students have a thirst for knowledge and a desire to succeed. Perhaps the most important skill my students need to develop before graduating high school is the ability to read at a functional level.
