Differentiated seating and instruction is important for all students, especially students with special needs. My students are currently working at desks and on the floor with white boards and pillows. My students are encouraged to work together and collaborate and having different seating options will allow groups to move together around the room comfortably.
When my students are given the freedom to move around the room and work together, amazing things happen.
Students that had difficulty in a certain subject were able to move around the room and gain assistance from peers. My students are able to focus more when they are given the freedom to work in different areas in the classroom.
I have a clear set of rules and expectations for my students involving flexible seating and they know how they need to behave in each section of the room.
My students with ADHD are able to sit in a seat that allows them to move around more without disrupting those around them. Most of my seating is light weight and students are able to move them around the room to work with different groups of students/teachers.
Some of the items that will help my students include: beanbag chairs, light weight and movable desks, lap desks, chair balls, and surf portable desks. My students will be able to move these items around the room and can easily engage with other students.
My students are already improving with the flexible seating currently available in my classroom and I know these additional seating options will allow them to thrive this year!
