“ A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one.” ― George R.R. Martin, A Dance with Dragons. As a teacher in an at-risk school, I want my students to "live many lives" through the books they are exposed to. Reading allows my students to experience worlds and ideas that they would otherwise know nothing about. Additionally, independent choice in what books they read allows students to be engaged in their own learning and fosters a love of books. Because I work in a dual-immersion school, I want to include the category of "books written in Spanish" to our independent reading program. By 6th grade, core ELA instruction is in English. However, independent reading time allows students an opportunity to read high quality literature in their native language. Part of my ELA curriculum requires students to read self- selected material. Many students actually find it overwhelming to choose from a whole library of books, and are much more engaged when the have a specific genre to choose from. Over the last two years, I have worked to build a library that includes specific genres (ex: biographies, books written in verse, and Newberry award winning novels). Getting out a new bin/ genre of books every couple of months is always exciting for my students and definitely encourages them to read more! Adding the category of "books written in Spanish" will be a fun way to motivate my students to continue to explore new worlds and "live more lives".
