  • Books The Students Can Read

    Funded Oct 15, 2018

Thank you so much for your generous donation! I cannot wait to see the kids faces when I show them their new books. We have three new students in particular, who just arrived from the Dominican Republic, who I think will be so excited to access text and be successful in their own language!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chaikovsky

  • Dream DEAR Library

    Funded Aug 21, 2018

My students and I are absolutely overwhelmed by your support! I officially told my class today that 70 new books would be arriving for our library, and the whole classroom lit up with thrilled smiles and enthusiastic snaps (how we quietly show that we are excited about something in class). I told them that this money comes from people in this country who care about them as scholars, and all of my students were touched by this show of community. I already have a long list of books requests for the students to read both in class and at home, as soon as they arrive. Your donations mean the absolute world to me and my students, because unfortunately not all of my class has fallen in love with reading (yet!). However, there is nothing like a new book, and an amazing story, to change this. I cannot wait to keep all of you updated on our progress!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chaikovsky

I want to create a classroom library full of books and audio books that my students want to read and are able to read by themselves! I want to encourage a DEAR culture (Drop Everything And Read) in my classroom so that these kids can walk away from school with a true passion for literature. However, in order to do this, my students need books that capture their attention, engage them, and are at their reading levels. This means they need books that reflect their Dominican culture, hobbies, and interests. If my students don’t have books specifically for English language learners, it is hard for them to find books that excite them. Often times, the books at their level are created for kids much younger than them. I believe that my students deserve new books in their library and technology like audiobooks to show them that this country values their education as much as that of any other student in America. I want my students to know that their learning and interests are supported in my classroom, regardless of their level or background. It is my dream to have my students begging me to take home their DEAR books and read them in their spare time (although they will also get lots of time in class to explore the library). Please help me get my English language learners fired up about reading! With your help, we can make this happen!
