My kindergarten students deserve the chance to become lifelong learners. This upcoming school year will be my second year as a teacher. With that being said, I still do not have all of the materials that I need in order to help my students develop conceptual understanding in math. In order for my students to become successful, they need math manipulatives in order to help them understand mathematical ideas, and have the ability to transfer their knowledge into new situations and apply it to new contexts. For my project, I chose resources such as a class set of rekenreks, a magnetic rekenrek demonstration frame, a class set of ten frames, a ten frame floor mat, and a counting place value pocket chart. The reason for choosing these resources is to help support the natural development of number sense in my students. The hands on manipulatives I chose will aid in a visual model to help my students discover number relationships and develop a variety of skills such as addition, subtraction, more than, less than, equal to, and making tens. The use of math manipulatives in teaching mathematics has a positive effect on student achievement by allowing students to use concrete objects to observe, model, and internalize abstract concepts. Math manipulatives allows students to use their own cognitive models for abstract mathematical ideas and processes. So please help me to help my students become lifelong learners by purchasing the materials they need in order to foster the continuous development and personal fulfillment of each and every one of my students.
