The more freedom you give a student, the more he or she will create and rise to the occasion. When students are performing on stage, they transport themselves to whatever setting and situation the script calls for. The freedom to enter and exit the stage from any direction especially when the script calls for it, allows students to stay in character and use even more of their imagination to convince the audience that they are no longer in a middle school auditorium. Blocking a play is challenging when students only have one way to enter and exit the stage. There is no backstage, no legs for alternate entrances, and no wings to house students who are ready and waiting for their turn to go on. Students ultimately end up lining up against the auditorium walls and await their turn to climb the short staircase to enter the stage, cutting out all mystery of their character or costume reveal to parents and audience members. Adding Pipe and Drape kits to create a backstage, wings, and side entrances will allow freedom for transitions during a play. Expanding drapes across the length of the stage (upstage) would allow students to cross over without being seen and without running around the back of the auditorium, behind audience members. Similarly, drapes running vertically stage right and left creating side tunnels will allow for variety in entrances and exits allowing for more dramatic scenes. The banner stands will serve as backdrop frames to create different settings and backgrounds. Additional drapes will create extended wings where actors will wait for stage entrances. Students will be able to extend themselves creatively and prepare for the next level of dramatic arts, and pipe and drape kits will greatly assist in making this a reality.
