The best way to learn statistics is to DO statistics. We begin our year learning about experimentation: Does caffeine affect pulse rate? Can you taste the difference between bottled and tap water? How likely are you to be picked out of a group? Each of these activities require supplies. Plastic cups, lots of plastic cups, are needed to set up and perform experiments for 145 statistics students. We record our data on white boards and use white boards to practice answering questions. Colored paper makes it easier for students to find important tables and formulas in their binders. Playing cards and note cards are used in a variety of ways to help simulate probability scenarios and to answer inference questions as we enter our second semester. We use graphing calculators to simulate probability scenarios and to do ALL statistical calculations throughout the year. Many students cannot afford their own graphing calculator. I'd like to have a few calculators that I can check out to students for the year so that they have the technology available at school and at home.
