My scholars need a classroom library. Having a comprehensive and intentional classroom library is vital for many reasons. Through literacy, scholars will be able to enhance their vocabulary and language skills. Reading is not only a skill that helps scholars academically but also socially and emotionally. Books can help students learn about the world around them, build empathy and understanding. Through a book, one can develop their imagination and global awareness at the same time.
It is critical for my scholars to have access to a wide range of literacy so that they can establish a genuine love for reading. The more books, topics, and prints they see the more likely they are to find things that excite them and ignite a passion for reading. With the ability to read, explore topics and historical figures scholars will begin their journey of being lifelong learners.
An environment that facilitates independent and critical thinkers is one that is very text rich. Each scholar is different and deserves to be exposed to literacy that is interesting, thought-provoking, and most importantly on their reading level. Scholars' reading abilities and interest change throughout the year and a classroom library should reflect that. I have three primary goals for the classroom library. The first goal is to have a classroom library that is as diverse as my students. Next, I aim to foster independent reading for pleasure and research purposes. Lastly, each student would always have access to at least three books on their reading level, which they find intriguing. Reading and learning to read is indeed a personal experience. Scholars should be able to read, grow, and learn at a pace that makes sense to their journey. A classroom library would benefit the students, classroom environment, and mainly our community as a whole.
