  • Books to Brighten Our Reading Lives

    Funded Sep 6, 2021

Thank you for your generous donations that allowed us to provide high-engagement, diverse, sought-after books into our classroom library. The books have been flying off the shelves, and student reading has increased.

We even started a whole-class read aloud of Long Way Down, by Jason Reynolds. Some of my more reluctant readers are begging for just one more chapter to be read at the end of our read aloud sessions.

We've also used the books to help support small-groups of students to make growth towards reaching benchmark reading levels for 8th grade, which will help prepare them for high school and beyond.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Storck

  • Bring Faces to Remote Instruction

    Funded Oct 28, 2020

I cannot express how thankful I am for your help funding my project. When I first created my project, I was teaching one history class, one period a week, remotely, and felt the need to improve the experience. Not too long after receiving my screen, NYC schools shifted to an all-remote program. For the past three months, I've been teaching entirely, from 8:30am-3:30pm, from my home computer desk. Having the second screen has completely transformed my practice and really benefited my students.

For one thing, when presenting information like model essays, other students' exemplar work, or a historical documentary, I am still able to see the students' faces and the chat box-allowing me to be responsive in my teaching.

Additionally, in our daily advisory, where we work on social-emotional learning, we can place team-building games while still seeing one another's faces.

Finally, when teaching has felt difficult, or unrewarding, or overly stressful, being able to see my entire class on the screen-see their faces, their smiles, and their reactions to our work, has made me feel the reward of teaching-the human side of teaching, that is just immeasurably important.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Storck

The New York City School System is doing something no other major school system in the nation is trying to do-bring students back to school! This has lead to a major crisis- a teacher shortage like never before. Because of this, I've agreed to teach our 8th graders history this year, even though I don't have a history degree. I made the decision to agree to teach history for many reasons- we are living in historically significant and unprecedented times, and now, more than ever, learning and reflecting on our nation's history feels so important. That being said, I do need to teach this class remotely to about 30 8th graders at a time. One of the biggest struggles as a teacher is how hard it is to make connections, and read your students' emotions and understanding, over a 13" monitor! This second monitor will mean I will no longer have to choose between seeing the content I am teaching or seeing my students' faces on the screen!
