Our school has had an after school Rubik's cube club for the last five years. The students who join the club learn to solve the traditional 3x3 cube by mentally processing through the first several steps to move pieces into the right place, and eventually following algorithms to solve the rest. The Rubik's Cube offers students a hands-on experience to challenge their brains and their perseverance! Once students master the 3x3 they can challenge themselves further by learning to solve the 2x2, the pyraminx, and many other styles of cubes. Students who have mastered certain stages, or the whole cube, become teachers who support each other through difficult steps! This highly sought out school club offers out-of-the-box thinkers an opportunity to challenge their left-brain, by applying sequencing strategies and algorithms to solve the different faces of the cube, and their right-brain, by creating artistic designs and patterns! In the last several years, the students have taken the initiative to expand the program by bringing in their own unique cubes and taking on the responsibility to teach others how to use them. With a set of 100 cubes, students can work beyond the individual challenge of solving the cube and build their abilities to work as a team to create mosaics.
