Where do you like to sit to get work done? It might be at your kitchen table in a strong, hard, wooden chair, or it may be in your living room on a big comfy recliner. (As I write this I'm laying on my bed!) Where you prefer to sit may not be what I prefer, and the same is true for my students. Some students work best at traditional desks, but others are most engaged and on task while they get their wiggles out as they bounce on a balance ball. Balance balls, wobble stools, and wiggle cushions give my students different seating options- Options that help them learn. The research is in, and it supports flexible seating arrangements. These different seating options will help motivate my students. They will encourage more physical activity in my classroom, and physical activity helps send oxygen to the brain. More oxygen to the brain means more learning, and more learning is a good thing! Also, (and this is one of my most favorite things about different seating options) flexible seating is linked to better behavior in the classroom! This makes sense! When kids are given choices and opportunities to move they behave better! My students are not the same students that sat in classrooms fifty years ago. My students are tablet gurus and wifi geniuses. They inhale oxygen and technology in each breath. Since my students are not the same kids we saw fifty years ago their classroom shouldn't look the same either. We must adapt our classroom to fit the needs of these technologically savvy, fast paced learners.
