When seeing an inservice day meeting on my calendar, one of my first thoughts is how I will be stuck sitting on an uncomfortable plastic chair throughout the day. However, this is something I expect from my second grade students on a daily basis. Previously, my most sought after reward is sitting in a “special chair” in the classroom. I have been impressed with the amount of engagement, participation and responsibility while students take part in this reward. Each of these students has their own individual needs and learning styles. I would love the opportunity to provide options for the students based on those needs. Some students work best standing, while others may just like a cushion on their seats. Some students may have further needs where the option to move on a stability ball would help ease their mind and enable them to focus. I look forward to seeing how transforming the seating options in my classroom can increase overall student focus and achievement.
