I honestly cannot thank you enough for your selfless and altruistic contribution to my classroom. Because of you my students are able to have access to more advanced literature, more engaging stories and technology that the typical urban teenager is not familiar with. Because of you I can do my job with ease and not worry about whether or not I have the materials and support to do my job properly. Donors like you give me hope that indeed my efforts and idealism is appreciated and even encouraged.
Many, many thanks!”
With gratitude,
Mr. Harshman

My students are freshman in a relatively destitute urban environment. Some of them are voracious readers, while others (I find) reserve this past-time for school only. Active reading, I fear, is not a virtue that has been impressed upon them or instilled in them firmly in the past; I seek to change that with this project. And as these freshman are new to high school (and are still functioning under the mindset of middle school expectations and academic rigor) I want to usher them into high school level literary analysis in the most entertaining way possible: with contemporary, pop-culture literature. I feel (given my own experiences at that age and my own introduction to literature via Mr. King) that the student response will be immediate and impressive.
