Science Manipulatives for the Spanish Classroom

Funded Jan 28, 2013

I just wanted to give you a few examples of how your generous gift has made an impact on my classroom with my students. My kindergartners were SO curious about the insect specimens I was able to purchase. They were able to see from multiple different examples of REAL insects that insects really DO have 6 legs, three body parts and two antennae. And they really wanted to know if they were alive and could "get out"!

My 3rd graders loved seeing "The Umbrella" (rainforest story) told through the stuffed animals from the story. It made the language (all in Spanish) come alive for them. Even my students who struggle with learning in English (let alone a second language) were able to access the content of the story and learn some unfamiliar names of animals in Spanish.

My 2nd graders were so engaged with the barn and farm animals that I was able to purchase for them while we were studying "la granja" (the farm). It was definitely the "preferred center" and if they didn't use Spanish they couldn't stay. LOTS of Spanish was spoken in that center!

Thank you again for helping my students learn Spanish through learning about the world and the environment!”

With gratitude,

Ms. Gaston
