Clearview base ten models, Cuisenaire Rods, and multiplication/division kits are manipulatives that will make a difference in students' learning by providing them hands-on opportunities that will make learning meaningful, FUN, and engaging! These supplies will be used during a variety of times during the day, such as introductory mini-lessons, small group activities, tutorials, and math stations. Students will learn to work cooperatively with one another as they explore the world of math with their hands while sharing ideas with one another.
The donations to this project will help improve my students' understanding of mathematics in a way that will travel with them throughout their school careers and beyond. In the state of Texas, decimals are first introduced in 4th grade, and it is so important for students to get a true understanding of their meaning. The Clearview base ten blocks that I am requesting provide a path to understanding. Each "unit" snaps on top of each "whole", providing a clear visual. Also, the coin stamps help bridge the concept of money to decimals. The Cuisenaire Rods that I am requesting also provide a clear visual for strip diagrams, or bar models. These are an invaluable tool when moving through the problem-solving model. Multiplication and division are both introduced in grades prior to 4th grade. However, in 4th grade, these concepts move into more difficult territory! The hands-on kits that I am requesting help students grasp the meaning of these concepts.
In short, all of these manipulatives will help students move from concrete to pictorial to abstract...the steps that are vital to true understanding of mathematics. Thank you for considering this project!
