Science of Reading From the Start
Funded Aug 30, 2023Thank you so much for supporting our project to get science-based reading instruction early and from the start. Working as a special education teacher in a Title 1 school, my students do not always have access to the type of instruction that they need. This kind of inequity is what spurred me to pursue a Master's in Reading Instruction.
The notebooks and double-sided token pieces are used daily to provide daily practice in sounding out and spelling words. They allow students to have multi-sensory practice and access to language. A few students need to work on their handwriting, and the menu covers have allowed for repeated practice with handwriting tasks.
Thank you again for your support of our classroom. You're generous donation is allowing me to provide the best instruction that I can without worrying about a financial burden.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Rish
Back to the Basics
Funded Mar 6, 2023Your donation has been such a wonderful support to our classroom. No matter what students were able to bring from their school supply list, we didn't need to worry. We had the pencils, markers and supplies that we needed to get the year started out right.
This morning, we needed headphones. 80% of the class did not have their headphones. We were able to use the donated headphones to ensure that students had equal access to a quiet testing environment. They were all able to participate in the assigned activity without guilt or shame.
This is all thanks to your donation.”

Building a Strong Foundation
Funded Oct 31, 2022Did you know that not all words can be "sounded out" using the most common sound-letter correspondences? A text that contains only words that can sounded out is considered "decodable." In our classroom, we have a myriad of books, but only some are what we would consider "decodable." For emerging readers, it is critical that they read texts that are at the student's reading level using words that they can sound out with the letters that they have learned.
I have a class set of these kinds of books, but I did not have enough to send them home with students to practice. One of my students in particular has benefited from being able to take home the books donated through this project. She is a newcomer to Hawaii from the Marshall Islands. She is loving being able to take home books to practice reading at home.
We've also enjoyed being able to make use of the learning tools from our order. Each student is at different places and benefits from the practice of tapping and writing sounds that are missing from the words.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Rish
