  • More Masks, More Spray

    Funded Dec 16, 2021

Thanks so much for the supplies for keeping my students safe the rest of this year! I greatly appreciate the support during this trying time. It gives me peace of mind knowing we have help and support during this pandemic. Our students will appreciate it as well. Again thank you so much.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Oliver

  • Safety First

    Funded Aug 10, 2021

We're off to a great start. This 1st quarter, we've had a few students who were exposed and became positive for COVID while at home, but not ONE verified in school transmission! Over 50% of the kids in 7-12 are now fully vaccinated and everyone's masking, social distancing, and sanitizing their hands. Schools near us have had to take a week or more off to allow for testing and quarantine, but so far, we've not had that problem, thanks to donations of supplies and masks. We're so greatful for the help!”

  • Reading Nook Furnishings

    Funded Oct 16, 2019

My students were so excited about the new seating. I've actually had several students "read ahead" so that they could make the argument that they should have "extra" turns to sit in the nook area, on the beanbag chairs. Each group within my 6 classes is reading a book, and we meet weekly in the seating area to talk about what they are reading and to make predictions about what will happen next in the respective books. They are very engaged in maximizing the work we do in those meetings and look forward to the discussions we have. There used to be some students who would simply ignore their independent reading requirements, but now no one wants to be the person in the group who lets the team down by not knowing what happened in the assigned pages. When the discussions finish each week, the students still have 20 minutes or so that they can use to read the next part of their books while sitting in the comfy bean bag chairs. These chairs are a great asset, and the younger (7-9) students in our school have already expressed their enthusiasm for getting to their sophomore year English classes because the bean bag chairs are so cool!”

  • Young People Who Want to Read a History Book?

    Funded Oct 25, 2018

These books are in use for a 2nd great school year. Both my AP Lang and Comp and my non-AP 11th graders have found the Zinn version of history interesting and learning history from the perspective of the common person has provoked discussions about liberty, justice, and freedom and our views of what it means to be a "patriot" in an age of divisiveness and injustice. The students are asking questions and looking for better, more complete answers not only in my class but also in their history and civics classrooms.”

    With gratitude,

My AP Language and Composition class wants to read this book. They actually requested it as a class! It's always easier to study a book that they have chosen themselves, and since most of them are also taking AP US History this year. It's a win for both classes! I am glad that they are aware that there may be history that they need to know about beyond the standard state endorsed textbook! They are a really great group of kids and I want them to have everything they need to succeed, but most of them come from impoverished single parent households where buying their own books is not possible. We've been able to borrow some non-fiction texts and we've had some donated by local bibliophiles in support of building up our program, but they need to know that people are willing to invest in their success. We looked at book reviews of several non-fiction works, including some good biographies and autobiographies, but the class voted, and they unanimously agreed that this book by Howard Zinn would give them the most information. We plan on spending an entire quarter digging into the Zinn text and comparing his work to other history textbooks and sources for maximum understanding. The students, of course, will be writing extensively about the topics covered. My hope is to not only improve their literacy and writing skills, but also to help them see that history is often interpreted with an agenda involved. This book study should make the issues with history textbooks abundantly clear and help deepen their understanding of American history overall.
