Reading is truly one of the most important skills that students will learn and continue to develop throughout their life. To encourage the students to hone their reading skills, I have decided to use novel units in the classroom. The novels chosen are relevant to the students and continue their understanding of different genres in literature. The Sign of the Beaver is a great historical fiction that gives the students a glimpse into the life of a boy during Colonial times. Deep and Dark and Dangerous is a wonderful mystery/ghost story that provides great opportunity for inference and prediction. Freak the Mighty is a realistic fiction that shows the students the power of friendship and imagination. By using novels to deepen reading skills, opportunities for discussion, collaboration, and understanding are improved. When there is a book for every student to use, comprehension and word fluency are greatly increased.
