My kindergarten classroom is full of choice in order to develop student independence. Students enjoy getting to choose a space that best helps their learning styles and needs. This is often witnessed by students laying on the floor writing, reading under tables, or working with clipboards around the room. With new choices to make seating more comfortable, my students will be able to choose what type of seat will work best for their needs at that time. These include wobbly cushions to use on the floor or seats to wiggle around on, lap desks to promote writing around the room while maintaining penmanship, stools that will better fit at my guided reading table, folding chairs for the classroom library to enhance their reading experience rather than sitting on a carpet, as well as a variety of other seats to use around the room instead of a standard hard plastic chair and table. Studies have shown that students who are given choice become more independent learners and enjoy and take pride in their work. I have worked hard to create learning choices within their independent work stations and with the materials they use. Creating flexible seating options within classroom is my next step to continue to enhance my energetic kindergarteners' love of learning!
