This year, I am trying to set up a writing station for my budding authors. Real authors need real tools to help them create their masterpieces! I have tried to curate a list of tools and materials to help my little friends be successful writers. They will use these to craft, edit, revise, and illustrate their works, as well as keep everything organized. I have seen firsthand how having just the right tools can motivate even the most reluctant writer. Having a variety of creative, age-appropriate writing tools goes such a long way towards helping students become deeply engaged in the writing process. They need to persevere in fixing up their first attempts and mistakes, elaborate on their thinking, and illustrate their stories to wow their audience. All of this is done while applying the phonics and handwriting skills we are trying to master every day! This is a BIG job for little minds and bodies, and I know we are up for the challenge! I am hoping that having writing tools readily available for student use will help foster independence with their writing. Releasing the responsibility to students for managing their writing materials will help them to take ownership of their writing, and will allow me to have more instructional time conferring with small groups and individual students during Writer's Workshop.
