When a student struggles to decode words to become a fluent reader, that doesn't mean they should not have the opportunity to be exposed to grade level text that will pique their interest. Struggling readers have the mental maturity level and comprehension ability to learn from and enjoy the more complex text, but sadly they cannot read it on their own. By missing out on the appropriate grade level text, those struggling readers do not get exposed to age-appropriate vocabulary as well as complex sentence structure. By using Kindle Fires in my classroom, the implementation of Immersion Reading can happen on a daily basis for the struggling students that need it! With Immersion Reading for Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD, Kindle edition books are synced to the corresponding Audible audio edition AND as the books are read, the text is highlighted while it is narrated via the Audible Audiobook. This leads to Multisensory learning and gives those struggling readers a chance to be exposed to grade level vocabulary which will enhance their comprehension. In addition, it will boost their self-esteem because they will be reading higher level books and even move into chapter books which is the normal progression of the 2nd-grade reader.
