Having flexible seating can greatly increase a student's focus. Some seats are super for children with ADHD or kids who just need more movement.(Kids Kore Wobble Chairs, Trideer Inflated Stability Wobble Cushions, Abilitations Bitty Bottom Seat, DYNAIR BALANCE SEAT) Other students do better in wiggly seats because it helps them stay alert and responsive. (FitPro Ball, Merrithew Stability Ball Base, Gaiam Kids Stay-N-Play Children's Balance Ball, Stott Pilates Youth 45 cm Stability Ball, BOUNCY BANDS FOR CHAIRS) Some prefer a seat where they can sit or sprawl on the floor for a while (Softzone Carry Me Floor Cushions, Stansport "Go Anywhere" Chair ) while others prefer a comforting nest like a bean bag (Big Joe Dorm Bean Bag Chair). In addition, many children benefit from having fidgets or headphones for help with sensory processing. Brain research says we all learn better when we are happy and comfortable! One article referred to emotion as the "on-off switch to learning" (Vail). While some children come to school ready to engage in academics, many others need extra support. Trauma-based instruction theory suggests that students will do better in school if they are made more physically and emotionally comfortable. Another reason this seating will help my class is the softness and homeyness it adds to the room. Bringing in plants, cozy items, comfortable seats, and gentle lighting helps kids relax and let go of some of the tensions they bring with them to school. I'm bringing the plants, a fish tank, some old floor pillows, and lots of enthusiasm, but I need your help for specialty items. Many of these students were lucky enough to experience flexible seating in first grade, and I would like to continue giving them the most responsive environment possible.
