  • Save the Drama for My Students!

    Funded Aug 9, 2022

Our actors have had a great start in Drama Club. It is amazing how new items, props, tech items and choices have inspired them to work hard. We have just started rehearsals for 2 plays that we were able to choose from the books we received through your donations. Scripts are kept safely in their folders and we were able to organize them based on the colors received.

We have some actors that are soft-spoken and were very worried about being heard from a big stage out to the audience. I was so excited to show the group the donated voice amplifiers and how they could wear them and move around without worrying about being out of range of a microphone or having to project their lines (especially when dealing with nerves!).

We would not be where we are without all of your help. The students, knowing that people out there want to support their quest to be heard and seen on stage, are excited, dedicated, and ready to shine!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Chilcote

  • Mrs. Chilcote's and Mrs. Monath's Reading/Writing/Social Studies ADVENTURE!

    Funded Sep 17, 2020

Our students have been exposed to enhanced learning through the use of our new costumes and green screen. It was very hard to keep students engaged in our distance learning lessons, but now they are sitting on the edge of their seats waiting to see if any "guests" join to share detective investigations on grammar, explain their dismay at the taxes imposed by King George or teach them about colonial life.

The first day we hired the main idea detective, the students came to life - they wanted to give their answers and explain to the detective why his main ideas were not correct. They took on the jobs given to them by the Grammar Police to find sentence errors with enthusiasm. The highlighters and bookmarks we were able to give them, with the magnifying glasses, brought them in on the fun with us - they felt a part of the detective family! They pull out their magnifiers and highlighters all the time and dive into their textbooks.

Here is what they have been saying: "The video is very funny", "That was a lot of fun today", "When will the detective visit again?" "Tell King George is is unfair" "Can we do more?"

Our next steps are to introduce the games once we are back in the classroom to make those reading concepts even more fun and allow the students to collaborate together in their learning. We could not have done it without your help!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Chilcote

  • Stand, Get Answers, and Be Heard!

    Funded Dec 13, 2018

I cannot express the gratitude I have for your donations. As you can see from the pictures, we have implemented our Alexa, Q-Ball and Standing Desks as soon as we received them! Students are being heard from the back of the classroom. Students who were normally not willing to participate are raising hands and are excited to contribute to class discussions. My wiggly students are using the standing desks and are getting their energy out by rocking, and walking in place while standing and doing their work.

Students are thrilled with their new technology, using Alexa to help them spell science words and I'm enjoying Alexa's reminders of music, PE, and lunch. To have access to a standing desk, students have to complete an application that allows them to express why they feel the desk would improve their learning experience. The Q-Ball has resulted in the students creating a multiplication game to help them practice their facts while using the ball.

With these items, we will continue to enrich our learning by making it exciting and fun! We will continue to be able to be comfortable learning, and we will now be able to be heard by everyone in the room. Thank you for allowing us to have fun, to stand up, and to be heard!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Chilcote

My project covers three needs in my classroom - adjustable work areas, immediate access to information to enhance their learning, and technology that will put the fun back into participation. One of the biggest obstacles faced in the classroom is keeping students involved in their learning. When students are comfortable, they are focused. Some of my students find that standing is more comfortable than sitting. I allow them to stand whenever they wish, but they are having to still lean over to reach their desks. Having the adjustable desks will allow those students to concentrate on their work without the discomfort. The best part of our lessons are when the students take over. My students love to expand the lesson through discussions, ideas, and suggestions. However, we are an outside classroom and our voices have to compete with roofing projects in the neighborhood, noisy heaters, and screams of fun from other classes enjoying their recess time. Often I am asking students to speak up to be heard. The Qball is the solution! This is a foam ball that has a microphone inside to project the students' voices to a wireless speaker. No more repeating answers or ideas. Last is a recent request from my students. We were discussing the digestive system and someone asked about the size of the large intestine. I had to stop the lesson to go to my computer to 'google' the answer. I wanted the students to have the information they desired, but it took a moment for my computer to go back online and for me to type and search for the answer. The response from my students to my frustration was, "We need to ask Alexa!" Of course I agreed - instant answers!
