  • Bird Houses, Wind Chimes, Pinwheels & Wind Socks...Oh My!

    Funded May 9, 2023

A BIG Green Thank You, for supporting my classroom.

I have written several Donors Choose projects this school year. The benefit of writing these grants are to supplement the cost of classroom supplies. My projects have included Birdhouses, windsocks, indoor plants, outdoor sheds, shade umbrellas, child/adult sized lightweight chairs and STEM learning items this year alone. Fourteen total have been fully funded within 4.10/years from Donors just like you!

These classroom supplies have helped to build the capacity of learning tools that make for exciting Center Time activities. The learning I promote happens inside and outside the classroom.

The students benefited from the new items by feeling the wind blow with the pinwheels, observing the wind direction with the windsocks, hearing the beautiful sound of the chimes, helping the environment by giving birds a home and being protected by the hot sun with the shade tent. Additionally the garden items add a pop of color and a welcoming and inviting place to be for the whole school community.

Something as basic as garden items can make a huge impact on the classroom environment.

In total I have raised $8,500+ in grants through Donors Choose. THANK YOU.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Teresa

The students benefited from the new plants in the classroom. When adding green plants to the classroom space it is calming and adds to a peaceful environment. These learning experiences are a wonderful opportunity for young students to explore and take responsibility for a living thing.

Something as basic as plants can make a huge impact on the classroom environment and management.

    Funded Sep 16, 2022

Happy New Year. I hope you are all well.

Tremendous! Thank you very much for supporting my classroom.

The students benefited from new chairs in the classroom learning environment. The lightweight chairs allowed the students to independently move them as needed to join another center inside the classroom; or for ease helped move them to outdoor learning. After breakfast/lunch the students helped to stack them for sweeping the crumbs from the floor. This couldn't happen before with the heavy wooden chairs.

Something as basic as chairs can make a huge impact on the classroom environment and management.

In total I have raised $7,000+ in grants through Donors Choose. THANK YOU.”

The Teachers and students will be able to sit outside more comfortably with the sunshade umbrellas. We enjoy learning outdoors. However sometimes in May/June or Early September when school is in session it is very hot on the blacktop area. These will reduce the heat.

    Funded Sep 26, 2022

Happy New Year. I hope you are all well.

Amazing! Thank you very much for supporting my classroom.

The Teachers will be able to join the children during Breakfast, Morning Meeting, Center Time, Lunch or to play a classic game of musical chairs during a students birthday all with ease. As the chairs we had before were low to the ground and caused some knee or back pain. We are able to move the adult chairs inside/outside for special events such as the Thanksgiving Parent Breakfast, we had for our Teachers and Parents to sit comfortably.

In total I have raised $7,000+ in grants through Donors Choose. THANK YOU.”

  • Outdoor Shed for Pre-K Learning Materials in Harlem

    Funded Sep 7, 2022

Happy New Year. I hope you are all well.

WOW! Thank you very much for supporting Outdoor Learning. The Teachers on my grade team very much believe in how powerful the life lessons are when students learn outdoors with hands-on experiences.

These classroom supplies have helped to build the capacity of learning tools that make for exciting Center Time activities. The learning I promote happens inside and outside the classroom. The Outdoor Sheds have contributed to this. It provides the students a classroom in-a-box so to speak. Having an efficient way to learn outdoors without dragging the entire classroom outside. The various centers are organized in large tote boxes and secured in the sheds.

Additionally my colleagues have used their sheds to keep the students' scooters safe till the days end. The storage makes it easier on the families overall.

The items also correspond to the Department of Education's Pre-Kindergarten Units of Study. In total I have raised $7,000+ in grants through Donors Choose.

Thanks to all the Parent volunteers from the school community who helped to assemble the sheds to benefit the 3-K & Pre-K Classrooms.”

  • Outdoor Learning Sensory Experiences in Pre-K

    Funded May 17, 2021

WOW! Thank you very much for supporting Outdoor Learning. The Teachers on my grade team very much believe in how powerful the life lessons are when students learn outdoors with hands-on experiences.

This sensory/water/collection table will help us further these opportunities for years to come.

"When children pour water into measuring cups, they are exploring math concepts. When they drop corks, stones, feathers, and marbles into a tub of water, they are scientists exploring which objects float and which sink. When they comb sand into patterns, they learn about both math and art." -Creative Curriculum

We encourage children to experiment with these materials. As they do, we ask questions to focus their thinking on their discoveries: What happens when ___? How do you think that works? How could you change that? What does that remind you of? What would happen if ___? Tell me more.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Teresa

  • Outdoor Classroom Seating in Pre-K

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

My students and I will use the new resources of outdoor classroom seating to expand their knowledge of the natural environment. Reading, drawing, painting outside or rock collecting and finding nature objects like acorns, feathers or pinecones is a joy of a young learner. The outdoor seating will promote the gathering of an outdoor circle time to discuss these findings. Our school is invested in Outdoor Nature Explore Classrooms.

Next Steps would be to expand this with an outdoor shed for storage of their learning materials and outdoor grass carpets.

As a beautifully diverse Title I school in Harlem, New York City, our community faces many challenges. Minimal funding for materials that allow for imagination and a cozy classroom, the expansion of non-public schools in the area and personal struggles are just some challenges we face. Children need to feel safe and included in order to learn, and it is our goal to see that it happens. It is our mission to reach every child and promote their inner beauty and individuality through hands-on play, imagination, and a flexible (and cozy) classroom space. We believe that every child should feel "at home" and safe in their school community. We are requesting dramatic play materials and seating on a new clean carpet that promotes diversity and inclusion in the classroom. Our students are encouraged to express their personal and diverse backgrounds, family makeups and emotional needs. The materials we've requested were specifically chosen to help promote creativity and allows children to express their individuality.
