Book clubs are a powerful tool in the classroom. They allow for students to take an active role in their learning, develop collaborative skills as a team, and promote a positive attitude towards reading and writing. I would use these class sets to split students into small reading groups, with three students reading each novel. Varying day by day and week by week, students will have a specific role in their group, whether that be "Summarizer", "Vocab Builder", or "Quote Master". We need high interest, accessible book sets which will provide a perfect balance: relevant, interesting titles that are also appropriate for lower-literacy students that need to focus on reading skills. Book clubs provide students with the unique opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of both their perspective and the perspectives of others on a piece of literature. One of the most important components of a middle school classroom is community, and reading in small groups helps to foster camaraderie and a sense of purpose amongst students. With these selected works, I want to demonstrate the ways that literacy can bring us together in a world that can sometimes feel torn apart. By gaining student interest and demonstrating true purpose with these novels, I am guiding students towards becoming more literate, knowledgeable world citizens.
