Research has shown that using non-fiction texts improves students' reading, comprehension and fluency. Additionally, research shows that using content that is relevant and current keeps students engaged. I have had the privilege of seeing the Scholastic News Magazines used in classrooms in the past. Now, I am a first year teacher with my own classroom full of eager minds. I want them to have materials that are engaging, but more so, extend beyond the basic reading instruction. Scholastic News Magazines allow for versatile instruction. They can be used for real-life application of essential reading skills. Using these skills with non-fiction will set a firm foundation for success for my students as life-long learners. They will learn how to comprehend, analyze and dissect a text while improving reading and fluency. In turn, the students will use these skills to form opinions and be able to support them with facts, use methods of research to write about a topic and make connections with the world around them. They will also be able to practice literary skills such as: cause and effect, sequence and fact and opinion. Scholastic News Magazines are a great resource for expanding literacy skills. I know my students will be better readers, learners and thinkers having access to this resource.
