I live in a city with one of the highest unemployment rates in Wisconsin. I teach at a school with a very high poverty rate. Sadly, I cannot expect my students to always come to class with the materials necessary to succeed. My students are in need of basic school supplies each year. Pencils, notebooks, and folders, among other basic materials are what they need most. Providing them with the use of bean bag chairs, storage bins, classroom markers, colored pencils, scissors etc., levels the playing field. These are supplies some schools take for granted that their students will arrive with on the first day. I do not teach in one of those districts. This year I would also like to create an incentive reading corner and smooth out classroom transitions for my students. Creating a comfortable, colorful, homey environment can lessen the stressors in the lives of at risk students. In addition, I have seen at risk students thrive in highly structured environments. When students can depend on a routine, have essential classroom materials at their fingertips, and an organized space in which to work, they can sit back, relax, and learn.
