One of the many reasons I became an ELA teacher was to spread joy and passion for reading. Every year I curate the library with the varied interests of my students in mind. I enjoy filling the library with leveled graphic novels and the mysteries that my students consistently request. However, by the end of the year many of the books have either been destroyed by misuse or are simply misplaced. The students have very little tracking in a classroom library and don't necessarily feel any responsibility with the books. To change all of that I am venturing into a plan for an independently student run classroom library this year. In order to teach the fifth grade class the value of reading and to understand the responsibility of sharing this library I am instituting a bar code library system where all of the books will be tracked and students will hold themselves responsible for their care and return. Students will check in and out using their own library cards and will also be responsible for returning the books on time for others to share. The software system will allow children to easily keep track of their due dates and keep the responsibility for the return and care of the books on them. However, there is no funding for the necessary technology of tablets to facilitate a smooth checkout/return process so I am requesting 2 Galaxy Tablets in order utilize this new system. I believe this system will give the students a respect and a love of reading by understanding that the literature is shared and valuable. They will value their books and will also feel it is truly their library with this donation of the tablets and accessories.
